MAY 2009

Hi everybody sorry their hasn’t been a newsletter for 2 months but I have been very busy with training, teaching and setting up our web sites attendance league but now with our web site finally complete their will be a regular newsletter at the beginning of each month.

Even though we are only 4 months into the year we have had a lot going on since I last put out a letter with gradings for our main class as well as little samurais, tournaments and also new classes starting and squad sessions beginning. With so much to tell you about I will try and keep this letter as short as possible.

WEB SITE

There have been a lot of up dates to our web site for your benefit. First I would like to inform you that I have put a, you tube section on our site. We have now got every Shotokan kata performed on video were you can look at your latest kata practise at home and even get your mums and dads to help you then come to your club with this in mind so you can try and progress quicker I am here to teach you so any questions on your kata feel free to ask. I also have kumite on there to and team kata this is a part of modern day karate that I feel needs to be used to help the modern day karateka you must always be looking to progress and these videos which will coast nothing will only help your knowledge in terms of performance and then you can try to take this mentality into your dojo this is a unique thing use it and you will only improve your karate.

Attendance league: As most of you are probably aware we have an attendance league in St Pat’s karate club this will help me keep up with how much each student has trained coming up to gradings. Have a look at the award and league tables on the web site you can see how you rank with in the clubs attendance league and also the achievement league, which is based on competitions a lot of you have now competed this year in tournaments so you will be in the league remember to get to ELITE you need to be in the top 10 of both leagues. www.stpatskarateclub.com

GRADINGS

March saw the first of 3 gradings for our main class for 2009 take place at the western leisure centre Cardiff well done to all the students that passes and the trophy for best graded student on the day was awarded to Ryan McGrane-Venn from the Gathering Place St Athan there was also awards for best graded student of each grade have a look at the award history on our web site to see who was awarded for each grade. We have started our grading system for our little samurais (4-7s) this has got off to a great start and I am sure that at the end of this 10 step system we will see a great benefit to our future stars. I feel this is a good system and as an instructor I can already see the benefits in discipline and performance well done to all of you.

                                                  NEXT 2 GRADINGS

Main Club Gradings                                                                     Little Samurai (4-7s)

July 25th                                                                                                          May 24th

December 12th                                                                                                 July 18th

                                             Venue to be arranged

PLEASE NOTE THE BELOW   FOR THE MAIN CLUB GRADINGS

As I mentioned at the last club grading there will be a few changes as to being eligible to grade from now on. It as been difficult over the last 6 months, to enforce these rules because of new classes opening up. But now within the St Pat’s system you will need the following below to be eligible to grade.

BEGINNER TO 4TH KYU

1/ you will need to have trained at least 18 sessions

2/ you will need to attend a grading course within our association (V.G.K.O)

3/ you will need to attend a grading course within St Pats (S.P.K.C)

BROWN BELTS THE SAME AS THE ABOVE BUT

1/ you will need to have trained at least 35 sessions

Please remember that to become a black belt is a great achievement and it is up to us to keep this as an achievement not something that is given out easily. As a karateka I feel it is my responsibility to keep the true performance of a karateka and to have a system that will not allow students to achieve these grades unless they have truly trained hard to achieve the standard that is expected. I believe at S.P.K.C we now have this system in place. Our syllabus is now the same as the V.G.K.O and I feel by having to attend these courses it will develop our student’s confidence and make it more of an achievement to grade within St Pat’s karate club. The dates for these courses are below.

ALL V.G.K.O COURSE ARE AT BARRY Y.M.C.A. HUBB

Red, green belts   APRIL, 25TH (SAT)

Blue, purple belts MAY, 2ND       (SAT)

4th kyu, 3rd kyu     MAY 9TH      (SAT)

2nd kyu 1st kyu      MAY 16TH    (SAT)

ALL S.P.K.C COURSE WILL BE WORKED WITH IN EACH CLUB

Please remember this is Shotokan karate it is up to you to achieve each grade not just awarded them I will always grade within the club as I feel I know each student personally and karate is about development of character not just performance and with the club now almost complete with a great structure to develop karatakas with our unique elite system it is also important for the financial set up of the club , we are now ready to take the next step to producing great karateka and more important great characters

TOURNAMENTS

Since our last newsletter we have started these years’ competitions with 3 tournaments in 3 months which was a great achievement for our club many students competed for the first time and there were a lot of great performances.

Dudley West Midlands

We had 5 competitors and came back with 3 medals

W.K.K Port Talbot

Most of our competitors competed for the first time and we had our first special needs competitors. We picked up 10 medals in total which included Zak, Daniel and Jamie’s photo in the south Wales echo well done boys.

Bushi Kai Port Talbot

Again a lot of new competitors, competing for the first time in a tournament with a lot of very high quality competition we picked up another 9 medals. So far this year St Pat’s has entered 3 competitions picking up 22 medals. That is a great start for a club with a lot of new comers and it was great to see all the parents and students pulling together to help each other out well done to everyone. You can see the full results on our tournament league.

CLUB PHOTS / VIDEOS

As some of you may be aware we used to have photos of you from the club , competitions and other events for sale at your club but this with every else was to much work for myself to keep up we have also always intended to have DVDs of the competitions that we go to so that students can use this film of them self’s to develop there karate again I did try this but it was to much work for myself to keep up , so we are now working with a company that will do this for use and you will be able to purchase photos and films of your self at gradings , competitions and training sessions from our web site through this company ( is that cool or what ) for more information

On this ask sue or myself at your club.

PRICE INCREASE

As from Friday 1st of may the training fee will be increased to £3.00 a class. This is due to an increase in hall fees. We have held off having to put the fee up but now we feel we

have no choice. The increase is by just 50p. For any one that becomes elite the fee will still remain at £1 per session. As many of you have ask me over the past couple of weeks I thought you should know that the elite will be reviewed every 4 months at the end of April , august , and December and there will be an announcement at the end of the following month .

FUNDRAISING / CLUB LOTTERY

As a club and with the systems that we have to help you the parents and students with the demands of a modern day sport as well as giving the students a future in coaching and supporting each team that competes for St pats we need as much help in fund raising as we can get , for the people that attended the end of year party in 2008 will know the club spend a lot of money on the students for there efforts through out the year the end of year party and awards night for 2009 will be bigger and better again this year so we need to start fund raising now any body with any ideas or willing to help in any way please just contact myself or sue , we have had it put to use the idea of a club lottery club any body interested in this it will just coast you £1 with some of the proceeded going to the club and the other majority to the winner , there is also a club raffle coming up and there are some great prizes to , you will be told more about this at your club when asked to buy a ticket .

SPONORSHIP

We are looking for a company to sponsor the club with the elite, if you know of any body that would be interested in this let me know. The elite system that we have as never be attempted in karate that I know of and the elite can be named after a company and although the club fund this we need as much help as possible to make it work (please remember this as never been attempted before lets make a change).

NEW ELITE BADGE

You may not be aware but the St Pats club badge was created from a competition   I made with the students of the club, and it was designed by the St Pat's karate students

(is that cool) but now with our elite program I want another badge just for the elite and I want you the students to design it to and we will give a prize to the winner so get started  .

DEVELOPMENT FUN DAY

The last time that I did a newsletter I mentioned that we were thinking of a trip to Ireland, after some thought with the present economic climate we feel it would be to expensive so we are going to try and have a development day instead we are thinking of holding this in July in the Gathering Place St Athan this would be a small competition for our little samurais in kata our more senior students refereeing for development reasons and a bouncy castle BBQ and some organised games for all the family we will arrange a bus to go from Cardiff to keep every body together or if people would like to make there own way they can. This day would be for development within St Pats a chance for everybody to get to know each other so it would have to be organised within the club any body that would like to help arrange this great fun day please let us now.

THANK YOU FOR YOUR SUPPORT

Hello again,

There have been a lot of events since I last wrote. On the 6th of June we had a club grading, it went very well, then on the 7th of June we went up to North Wales for the W.K.G.B

North Wales Open. The club picked up 6 medals in total. It was great to see Connor, grace and Aeron all coming home with medals. Then the next day, Robert, Daniel G and Daniel D went to Welsh squad training, this was the first time St Pats have had club members train with the Welsh squad. Well done lads for representing the club. Also on the same day we had two of our Little Samurai passed their yellow tip, a big well done to Matthew and Jayden. Two weeks later Nicole passed her yellow tip, well done to you Nicole.

Our clubs are growing fast; there is a lot going on that you may not be aware of. I have been trying to get help by way of grants or funding of some sort. On June 10th I had a

meeting with the south Wales police to try and get there help with a project I am working on with our teams, the meeting went really well the chief constable said he would try to help our club, I should be able to tell you more by the end of August. I also had a meeting with local MP Alan Michael to try and get help from the local council again this meeting went well. I will keep you all updated as information comes in.

On Saturday June 14th we did our sponsored walk, and what a great day that was. With 29 people walking we had a fun day. All the students that did the walk did a great job with

ages ranging from  4 to 16 years, so well done to you all. A special thanks to our organizers Shaun Kath and Laura Williams for making the day run so smoothly I don’t think any of us will forget how great it was to see Kath and Laura at our rest points waiting with refreshments for the tired walkers. So again thank you all so much. We are still waiting for the final amount raised but will let you know shortly. As promised the top three fund raisers will receive a gift, they are;

1st place Callum Williams

2nd place Lathan Kelly

3rd place Aeron Fitzgerald

All students that raised money for the club will receive a club tracksuit at the annual presentation in December.

On June 15th we headed to the south west open with just a small squad we picked up 4 medals 1 x 1st and 3 x 3rd place medals. Not bad because when I looked up the same tournament for last year we only picked up 1 x 3rd place. Look at the medal table and you will see that last year we entered 10 tournaments and picked up 33 medals, this year

so far we have entered 8 tournaments and have picked up 34 medals and we are only half way though the year. Thank you to all our students/parents for your commitment to the club.

The following weekend we were supposed to have a weekend off, BUT we were asked to do a demonstration in the grange gardens fete. With only a couple of hours notice as usual the club pulled together and we put on a nice display. Photos are now in the gallery.

St Pat’s karate clubs are going extremely well. We can measure our success by tournaments with medals and also the amount of students training with us we are a small and new club, open just over a year yet we already have over 100 students training with us each week. For such a young club these figures are amazing and it’s all down to the commitment shown by my students. What we are doing is working so let’s keep it up.

As you may be aware I am giving up my full time job as a printer in September and I will be teaching karate full time. I feel this is a great chance for me to do what I love and I thank you all for your support.

It has been a very busy four weeks and coming up we have two school demonstrations. So let’s get ready for a busy second half of 2008. The events calendar has now been updated so have a look and mark the dates in your dairy.

Hello Gang

Once again it has been a busy couple of weeks. Daniel Cole-Camacho passed his grading in St Paul’s Parish Hall. Daniel took his grading early because he was going on a well earned family holiday. Daniel was aloud to grade early because he has attended the most training sessions so far this year. Well done Daniel.

The session at the star sports centre went extremely well. Most of our regular students turned up. We are now going to start a regular training session in the star every Tuesday 6.30/7.30pm starting on Tuesday the 5th of August.

At the weekend it was the commonwealth karate championships in Edinburgh. The vale sent up a small but very talented squad to compete along with no fewer than 1300 competitors from all over the world. The vale squad came back with 2 bronze, 3 silver and 1 gold. Well done to the squad. To find out more or see who went up, go to valekarate.com

There is a lot happening in the club at the moment. On the 6th of June we have our club grading, 7th of June the North Wales Open, 8th of June welsh squad training in Cardiff attending are Robert Green, Daniel Green and Daniel Davenport. Also on the 8th of June the St Pauls Little Samurai are having a special presentation for 4 of students who have passed yellow tip. Then on the 14th of June we have our sponsored walk. Don’t forget to get your sponsorship the top three people with the most raised money will receive a prize. On the 15th of June it is the south west open tournament. As you can see we have a busy few weeks ahead. July should be a quiet month but watch this space....

I would like to start a birthday board on our site so if you have a birthday coming up can you let Sue know so we can get it on the site.

Speak to you again soon
